Arts and crafts idea – painted pots with funny plant-related puns
Spring is just around the corner, I can feel it! So what better way than to get ready with a fun little DIY craft project of painting plant puns pots? I started propagating some herbs a few weeks ago and now I need some pots to plant them in.
So while searching on the Mother of Good Ideas – Pinterest, I found these super cute painted pots that all had funny plant related puns on them. I’m a sucker for puns, I just love them! So of course I couldn’t resist making my own. And I’m very happy to say that this whole project was less than $20. Now THAT is what I call a win.
For this DIY Plant Pun Pots project you will need:
- Terracotta pots
- Sandpaper – I used this 220 grit sanding screen because that’s what we had around the house
- Rubbing alcohol
- Acrylic Paint
- Paintbrush
- Jute Rope
- Hot glue gun with gluesticks
- Potting soil
- Plants – these can be seeds, cuttings, or already established plants
You can find most of these items linked on Amazon below, but know that you can also often find this stuff at the dollar store too.

Painting the Pots
First you’ll want to start out by sanding the surface of your pots to smooth out any imperfections. Then you can wipe it down with some rubbing alcohol to remove the dust particles that are created.
Next you’ll start painting! I ended up doing three coats on mine but do as many as you need to get it to look how you want. Each coat took about 30 minutes to an hour to dry.
Hot Gluing Painted Pots
Then begin hot gluing the jute rope around the rim of the pots. I found that small dots of glue spaced about an inch apart worked the best.
I went back and added some more of the rope after I had gone around once because I felt like there were some gaps that needed to be filled. If you properly press it into place the first time you probably wont have this problem. π
Once that is done you can paint your plant puns on the sides. You can choose any you like, there are tons of ideas out there. You could even paint other quotes or designs too, there are no rules here! I used this paint marker which is totally optional but it gave me more control when writing on the pots.
Now it’s time to fill your pots with soil and plants. And voila! Charming little painted pots with plant puns.
Final Thoughts on Painting Pots
So even if it’s not spring, this makes a great project to do in a few hours indoors or out! I’d say difficulty level is very low, so it would also be great for kids, just make sure they have some help/supervision with the hot glue gun of course.
